Small Class Size Advantages
Average class size is an important metric used to compare how intimate of an education experience a school offers. The smaller the class size, the more opportunities a student will have to receive one-on-one teaching, chances to participate, and the resources for success.
Public education systems often suffer from budgeting issues for teacher salaries, which can cause school districts to have higher than average class sizes. Kirby Hall School was founded on the idea of providing a higher level of education for students by lowering class size in order to offer a more in-depth learning experience.
Average Class Size
Currently, the average class size of students in the United States is 21 for public elementary and 26 for public secondary school. At Kirby Hall School we pride ourselves on keeping the average class size around 10 students. With an average class size of 10 students for kindergarten to 12th grade, Kirby Hall teachers offer personalized instruction and form a closely knit community.
Benefits of Small Class Sizes at Kirby Hall School
A 1:1 Teaching Environment
With a smaller class size, teachers can focus on providing individual time with each student. A small classroom environment allows instructors to teach multiple perspectives, address any questions, and explain different viewpoints on a personal level. A smaller more closely knit classroom also allows teachers to address specific interests from students.
Higher Than Average Test Scores
With a smaller class size, a teacher can easily identify and offer additional help to students struggling in certain subjects. With more time to devote to each student, it is easy to focus efforts on teaching at the same level. This all results with students in smaller classes receiving higher test scores and all around better grades.
Easier to Form a Closely Knit Community
With a small classroom, it’s easier for students to bond and work together inside and outside of the classroom. A smaller class size where students work together and help each other on a daily basis creates a community focused on helping each other and the pursuit of the same educational objectives. It’s also easier for teachers to track student growth and identify issues and successes inside and outside of the classroom.
Participation Rises
In a smaller class environment, it’s easier for students to feel comfortable enough to participate and offer perspectives on a daily basis. Students will further open up with each other to form a more sincere and positive environment to share opinions and ideas. There is also an opportunity for all students’ voices to be heard.
