Art & Drama/Music

Our Art and Drama & Music programs are designed to provide students the opportunity to create with confidence. Individual self-expression through art, drama and music encourages empathy and compassion while also building community.

In Art, children are inspired to explore a variety of mediums, textures and techniques as they learn about art history and movements from the past. Each year, KHS hosts an Art Show where students are proud and excited to share their colorful and creative works with our entire school community.

Drama & Music classes aim to simplify theatrical and musical forms in order to allow students to use them for their own self-expression. This work nurtures creativity, teaches a “top to bottom” understanding of these subjects, and helps students feel comfortable and confident when expressing themselves in front of an audience.

Past performances in our Drama & Music classes at Kirby Hall have featured puppet shows, Shakespearian soliloquies, popular musicals, and ukulele concerts.

Makerspace/STEM

Students love the dedicated time in our Makerspace classes for younger grades and STEM programming for older ones. Tinkering and building whatever you can imagine is an important part of the hands-on learning that goes hand-in-hand with Kirby Hall. Middle School students begin to explore robotics, rocketry, woodworking, 3D design and printing, and coding.

Field Trips

Field trips are an important part of the Kirby Hall experience, and each class takes several throughout the year. These trips are opportunities for hands-on learning in the real world mirroring the lessons from our classrooms. Favorite field trips that students embark on include visits to the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, Blanton Museum, Austin Scottish Rite Theatre, Austin Zoo, Pioneer Farms, National Museum of the Pacific War (Fredericksburg), Inner Space Caverns, and the Austin Nature and Science Center.

One tradition that is unique to Kirby Hall is our annual excursion to Mo Ranch in the Texas Hill Country where older students (fourth grade and up) spend a week exploring nature and learning about leadership skills, problem solving, teamwork, and camaraderie.

Garden

All students spend ample time in our adjacent KHS garden nurturing our chickens and tending to the seasonal crops of vegetables, fruits and herbs that we grow there. Learning about nature and the life cycles of plants and animals from the ground up is just another way that we prioritize hands-on learning at Kirby Hall. Throughout the year, students organize markets to experience the process of sharing what they have grown with our community.
